RedSky and KCOS are pleased to present “Cancer on the Border: Collaboration is the Cure”
– a laser-focused, half-hour documentary detailing the fight against cancer within the Paso del Norte Region. According to the United States Census Bureau, the general population is becoming more racially and ethnically diverse, which carries over to the elderly population - with the older Hispanic population projected to grow the fastest, from under 3 million in 2010 to 17.5 million in 2050. This surge in growth combined with an aging population, and the fact that most cancers require many years to develop puts the Hispanic population at a higher risk of being diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime.
As we travel through El Paso, Texas; Las Cruces, New Mexico, and Ciudad Juárez, in the Mexican State of Chihuahua, RedSky and KCOS tell the story of researchers and community organizers working tirelessly to surmount the challenges to cancer care that not only face us here and now, but will also one day face our country as a whole.
“RedSky is excited to partner with KCOS to produce a regional film inspired by Ken Burns and Barak Goodman’s documentary ‘Cancer: The Emperor of All Maladies,’ states Alexander Di Rienzo, Creative Content and Media Manager at RedSky. “Our documentary, ‘Cancer on the Border: Collaboration is the Cure’ speaks to the uniqueness this region presents in dealing with cancer care and research from a border perspective.”
Directed by Nico Aguilera, this documentary speaks to the power of collaboration – across communities, institutions, states, and borders. “I don’t think this film could have come at a better time,” says Nico. “The Paso del Norte region presents the perfect landscape of what is happening in America at this very moment in cancer. Research, dialogue, collaboration – these elements are happening right in our own backyard. This documentary is simply a microcosm of what we need to talk about as a nation – how we together can fight back against cancer.”
